Durban Beef Curry

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 kg beef of your choice cut up into curry pieces
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 2cinnamon sticks 
  • 2bayleaves
  • 2 star aniseed
  • 1/4 tsp roasted and ground fennel seeds
  • 1 onion chopped
  • Curry leaves
  • 1full tsp ginger and garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp tumeric powder
  • 2 tbsp mixed masala
  • 2 tbsp Kashmiri  chillie powder 
  • 3 grated tomatoes
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 potatoes halved 2 green chillies split halfway
  • 1/4 tsp garum masala
  • Chopped dhania

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pot
  2. Add whole spices
  3. Onions and curry leaves
  4. Lightly brown and add ginger/garlic paste
  5. Add turmeric and masala  and chilli powder
  6. Add in the beef &mix well
  7. Add grated tomatoes and salt
  8. Cover and cook on medium heat for about 10mins or when liquids dry a bit and oil surfaces
  9. Add 500ml boiling water and cook till softened, add more water as needed
  10. 15mins before end of cooking time, add potatoes and green chillies
  11. Cook till potatoes are done
  12. Sprinkle garum masala over and a gentle shake of the pot
  13. Then add chopped dhania
